Khelo India scheme is a national programme for development of sports in India. It is one of the prominent , central sector scheme by the The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports . Three schemes namely Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA), Urban Sports Infrastructure Scheme (USIS), and National Sports Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS) merged together and formed the Khelo India scheme.
Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) is a national level multidisciplinary grassroots sports event held annually in India for the two categories of participants - under-17 school students and under-21 college students. KIYG was previously known as Khelo India School Games (KISG), the event is held in the months of January or February.

    KIYG is a multidisciplinary sports event that includes various sports such as athletics, boxing, badminton, basketball, football, hockey, judo, kabaddi, kho-kho, shooting, swimming, table tennis, volleyball, and wrestling.     The first edition of the youth games was Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31 January 2018 at the Indira Gandhi Arena. It was known as the Khelo India School Games in the first edition. The Indian Olympic Association's involved in the youth games from September 2018, the event was renamed the Khelo India Youth Games, starting with the 2019 edition.
    The second edition was inaugurated by Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi, Pune.
    In order to promote sports and fitness, PM Modi launched the Khelo India App during the Youth Indian Parliament at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on 27 February 2019. In addition to that, the first Khelo India University Games (KIUG) were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Cuttack on 22 February 2020. The games aimed to provide university-level athletes with the opportunity to participate in multi-disciplinary events and gain exposure.

    Objectives of Khelo India Youth Games

    The main objective of KIYG is to encourage and promote sports among the youth of the country and to identify and nurture talented athletes who can represent India at the international level.Thus turn India into a dominant force in the world of sports in the coming years. To achieve this goal, every year, the top 1,000 participants in the Khelo India Youth Games are awarded an annual scholarship of ₹5 lakh (as per 2023) for a period of 8 years. This financial support enables the talented athletes to receive the best training and coaching to prepare them for national and international sporting events.

    The program has several goals, including:
    • Improving the overall health and strength of society to foster a stronger nation.
    • Advancing in the field of sports.
    • Showcasing the nation's talents on a global level.
    • Establishing the country as a leading sporting nation.
    • Providing athletes with top-notch infrastructure and training.
    • Reviving the sports culture within the country.
